Blast Response of Layered Composite Panels via Explicit FEA
This case study investigated the dynamic response of modular composite panels subjected to blast loading using explicit finite element analysis. The analysis demonstrated a methodology for evaluating protective structures and highlighted effective blast mitigation mechanisms.

Project Overview
This engineering case study utilized explicit three-dimensional finite element analysis in LS-DYNA to investigate the dynamic response of layered composite panels under various blast loading scenarios. A baseline monolithic panel was benchmarked against a novel multi-material configuration, incorporating advanced concrete types and fiber-reinforced polymer layers. Blast loading was simulated using an empirical model calibrated to industry standards, considering both direct and aerial impact orientations. The analysis focused on predicting structural deformation, material failure, and energy absorption characteristics. Key findings included the identification of effective blast mitigation mechanisms, such as impedance-mismatch reflection and controlled sacrificial layer crushing. The work demonstrated a robust methodology for evaluating and optimizing protective structural designs, showcasing the capability to predict performance across a range of operating conditions and identify configurations that balance performance with design objectives.
